Planning guides for wildlife and safari
Frequently asked about Wildlife and Safari
What is Kumana National Park known for?
Birds are the main draw, especially the waterbirds that nest in the Kumana villu, such as painted storks, spot-billed pelicans and the rare black-necked stork. From the Kumana National Park guide
Is five days enough for the Cultural Triangle?
Yes, for the main sights: Sigiriya, Pidurangala, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla, an elephant safari and Kandy. Anuradhapura needs an extra day. From the 5 days in the Cultural Triangle guide
When is the best time for a wildlife safari in Sri Lanka?
It depends on the park. December to April suits the south: whales off Mirissa, Yala open and Sinharaja in season. May to October is the time for the elephant Gathering at Minneriya and Kaudulla, and for the east coast. From the Wildlife safari guide
Is seven days enough for Sri Lanka?
It's enough for the ancient cities, Kandy and the hill country if you keep to two nights in each place and accept three long travel days. It isn't enough to add a beach as well. From the 7 days in Sri Lanka guide
How long is the World's End walk?
The main circular trail from the visitor centre is about 9 km and takes around three hours, passing World's End and Baker's Falls. From the Horton Plains guide
Is Yala National Park open all year?
Not always. The DWC has traditionally closed the park in the driest months, around September and October, and heavy rain can close it at short notice. Any current closure is shown at the top of this page; check with the… From the Yala guide
