Kitulgala is a small town on the Kelani River in Kegalle District, on the A7 road between Avissawella and the hill country. Visitors come for white-water rafting and rainforest birdwatching, and because the crew of The Bridge on the River Kwai built and blew up the film’s bridge here.

Is Kitulgala for you?

Go if you want to raft the Kelani River with a registered operator, look for rainforest birds, or visit the filming site of a classic war film, on the way between Colombo and the hill country.

Think twice if you are travelling with younger children who want to raft, because Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) guidelines set a minimum age of 14 on all sections of the river. There is no railway either, so you need road transport.

White-water rafting on the Kelani

Rafting trips run on the Kelani River around Kitulgala, between forested banks. Rafting is one of the water adventure activities that operators register with the SLTDA, and its guidelines for rafting operators set out the minimum safety rules. Under them:

  • every trip starts with a safety briefing, and everyone signs a liability waiver and a medical form; people with a medical condition must not take part;
  • everyone, guides included, wears a properly fitted life jacket and a helmet throughout;
  • trips run only with trained instructors or guides, with a safety kayak close by;
  • no alcohol or drugs during the trip or for at least six hours before;
  • no rafting in the dark, and a minimum age of 14.

If an operator skips the briefing or the safety gear, choose another one instead. After heavy rain, follow your guide’s decision on whether it is safe to go out.

The Bridge on the River Kwai

David Lean made his 1957 film, which won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, in what was then Ceylon. The story takes place on the Burma Railway in Thailand, but the crew built the bridge itself on the river near Kitulgala. Then, in March 1957, they blew it up for the final scene. The concrete foundations built for the film reportedly still remain on the riverbank.

Belilena cave

Belilena (Beli-lena), near Kitulgala, is one of Sri Lanka’s major prehistoric cave sites. The Department of Archaeology excavated it between 1978 and 1983. Its finds included stone tools, evidence of fire, and animal and human bones. Researchers have since attributed the human remains to Balangoda Man, Sri Lanka’s prehistoric people. The site is an archaeological reserve.

Rainforest and birds

Birdwatchers stay at Kitulgala because the surrounding secondary forest holds many of the rainforest species also found at Sinharaja, in more open country. It was here, for example, that the ornithologist Deepal Warakagoda first detected the Serendib scops owl, by its call. Scientists then described it as a new species in 2004. In September 2026 researchers named a new endemic balsam, Impatiens yakandawalarum (“Kithulgala balsam”), from the Mannakeththa Ella area of Kithulgala.

Getting there and safety

  • By road: Kitulgala is on the A7, which runs from Avissawella through Karawanella, Yatiyantota, Kitulgala and Ginigathena towards Nuwara Eliya. The same road continues to Hatton, the usual base for climbing Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak).
  • Landslides and road closures: bad weather closed sections of the Avissawella–Hatton–Nuwara Eliya road in August 2026. Landslide warnings for Kegalle District are also common in heavy rain. Check conditions before you set out and heed local warnings.
  • On the river: only go on the water with an operator, and don’t swim where locals or guides advise against it.
