November is the month that splits opinion. On paper it’s one of the wettest of the year, the tail end of the second inter-monsoon, when thunderstorms and depressions can bring heavy rain anywhere and cyclones sometimes form. Yet it’s also when the south coast starts its season: the whale boats go back out from Mirissa, the surf picks up on the south-west, and hotels haven’t yet put on their Christmas prices.
So November can be a good month, as long as you travel with slack in the plan and keep an eye on the forecast.
What to expect from the weather
The Department of Census and Statistics describes October and November as the second inter-monsoon: light winds, afternoon and evening thunderstorms, and depressions that bring widespread heavy rain. For the island as a whole, it is the rainiest time of year.
It also matters which side you’re on. The east coast and the north are moving into their wet season, which runs from about October to January; the long-term average at Trincomalee is about 376 mm of rain in November. The south and west are coming out of the south-west monsoon and getting steadily drier towards December.
And November can bring cyclones. Cyclone Ditwah crossed the island at the end of November 2025, and its floods and landslides killed more than 600 people and damaged the hill-country railway, which is still reopening in stages. That was an extreme year, but it’s why you should check the Department of Meteorology’s forecasts and warnings before you travel and keep a spare day or two.
Where November works
- The south coast, late in the month. Sri Lanka Tourism gives Mirissa’s best beach months as November to April. Mirissa, Weligama, Unawatuna and Galle are the places to aim for, as the coast dries out towards December.
- Whale watching. The season off Mirissa runs from November to April, according to Sri Lanka Tourism, so the boats are back out. Rough days do happen, and the whale-watching rules say boats shouldn’t go out in bad weather, so keep a spare morning. See our Mirissa whale-watching guide.
- Surf on the south-west. Sri Lanka Tourism gives November to March as the best surfing at Hikkaduwa, and Weligama’s beginner season starts around the same time.
- Cities and culture. Colombo, Kandy and Galle Fort have plenty to do under cover when it rains: museums, temples, markets and food.

What to avoid
- The east coast beaches. Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay are in their wet season. Recent visitors at Nilaveli report choppy, murky water from November, and Pigeon Island closes when the sea is too rough.
- Tight hill-country connections. Heavy rain brings landslides and rockfalls on hill roads and the railway. Don’t plan a hill-country leg the day before an international flight. Our guide to travelling in the monsoon seasons lists the warning services to check.
- Sri Pada. The pilgrimage season doesn’t open until Unduvap Poya, on Wednesday 23 December 2026. Outside the season the climb is only allowed on two routes with a pass, and the weather on the mountain is often wet, windy and misty.
Holidays in November 2026
- Deepavali, Sunday 8 November. The Hindu festival of lights is a public holiday.
- Il Poya, Tuesday 24 November. A Poya holiday and dry day, when liquor shops and bars close and meat isn’t sold.
Our festival and Poya calendar has the dates for the year ahead.
Crowds and booking
November comes before the December to January peak, when Sri Lanka Tourism’s figures show the most visitor arrivals of the year. If you’re flexible about the weather, it’s a reasonable time to travel. Book places with fair cancellation terms, so you can move if the forecast turns.
