Udawalawe or Minneriya? Where to See Elephants

Guide

If you want to see wild elephants in Sri Lanka, two parks come up again and again: Udawalawe in the south and Minneriya in the north-central plains. Udawalawe is reliable all year, with open grassland and a reservoir that keeps the herds close. Minneriya is the home of the Gathering, when in the dry season elephants come together on the banks of an ancient tank in numbers that Udawalawe can’t match.

Choose by your route and your month. Heading between the hills and the south coast, Udawalawe is the easy detour. In the Cultural Triangle between about July and September, Minneriya is the one to plan around.

Udawalawe: elephants all year

Udawalawe National Park was declared in 1972, around the Udawalawe Reservoir on the border of Sabaragamuwa and Uva. Much of it is open grassland, which makes animals easy to spot, and the reservoir and the Walawe River supply water all year. That’s why elephants are the park’s main attraction in every season.

It’s an easy detour between the hill country and the south coast, about 165 km by road from Colombo. Next to the park, the Elephant Transit Home raises orphaned calves for release back into the wild, and visitors watch them at feeding time from a viewing pavilion. Recent visitors (2025–26) report that midweek mornings in the park are quieter than weekends and holidays.

Minneriya: the Gathering

Minneriya National Park lies between Habarana and Polonnaruwa, around a reservoir built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD. In the dry season, as the water shrinks, grass grows on its banks and elephants come from the surrounding forests to feed. Sri Lanka Tourism names May to October as the popular time, and recent visitors report the biggest numbers in August and September.

The herds move with the water: around September many cross to neighbouring Kaudulla, and drivers sometimes head to Hurulu Eco Park instead. Outside the Gathering, Minneriya has elephants, but not in the same numbers. Our guide to the elephant Gathering explains how to follow them.

Side by side

  • Best months: Udawalawe all year; Minneriya in the dry season, peaking in August and September.
  • Numbers: at its peak, the Gathering at Minneriya; Udawalawe for steady sightings of smaller herds.
  • Other wildlife: both have deer, buffalo and plenty of birds. Udawalawe has about 184 recorded bird species; leopards live there but are rarely seen.
  • Crowds: both get busy. At Minneriya, recent visitors report jeeps bunching around the herds in peak season; at Udawalawe, jeeps gather at the best spots too.
  • Where it fits: Udawalawe on the road between Ella and the south coast; Minneriya on a Cultural Triangle trip, from Habarana or Sigiriya.
  • Young elephants: the Elephant Transit Home at Udawalawe.

Booking either park

Both are run by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, which issues permits; you can reserve a day permit online. Safaris run by jeep with a driver, usually early morning or late afternoon. Stay in the jeep, keep your distance and don’t feed the animals, and leave pork at home: raw pork and pork products have been banned in national parks since October 2024.

For the welfare side of watching elephants, our guide to Pinnawala or wild elephants explains why both parks beat a captive herd, and Yala or Udawalawe compares Udawalawe with the leopard park next door.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Is Udawalawe or Minneriya better for elephants?

Minneriya at the peak of the Gathering, in August and September. For the rest of the year, Udawalawe is the more reliable choice.

Can you see elephants at Udawalawe all year?
