September is one of Sri Lanka’s in-between months, and a good one if you plan around it. The south-west monsoon is fading, but the west coast is still wet; the east coast, the north and the ancient cities are still in their dry season; and the big summer crowds have gone home. It’s the month for elephants at Minneriya and Kaudulla, for the last of the surf at Arugam Bay, and for travellers who don’t mind a shower in exchange for space.
The one thing to plan around is Yala, which has often closed in part around September and October.
Where to go in September
The east coast. Still the best beach option. From Trincomalee and Nilaveli down to Pasikuda, this side of the island is dry in the middle of the year, and several travel guides give May to September as Pasikuda’s best window. Arugam Bay’s surf season runs from April to October, according to Sri Lanka Tourism. Our guide to Trincomalee, Nilaveli or Pasikuda helps you choose a base.
The ancient cities. Anuradhapura, Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa are driest from June to September, so September is the end of their best stretch. Start early, as the plains are hot.
The north. Jaffna follows the east-coast pattern, driest in June and July and wettest from October to December, so September is still a reasonable time to go.
The hill country. The western hills around Hatton and Nuwara Eliya get the south-west monsoon, with the heaviest rain from June to August, and they’re drying out in September. The eastern side around Ella is in its drier season before the rain returns in October. Walk early, before the afternoon cloud.
The south and west coasts. Still wet. The Department of Census and Statistics puts the south-west monsoon from May to September, and our best time guide notes that the west coast is still wet in September. Seas can be rough, so check before swimming and heed red flags.

Wildlife in September
- The elephant Gathering. Recent visitors report the largest numbers at Minneriya in August and September, and around September many elephants move on to the neighbouring Kaudulla tank. Our guide to the elephant Gathering explains how to follow the herds.
- Yala. The Department of Wildlife Conservation has traditionally closed parts of Yala in the driest months, around September and October. In 2026 it closed Blocks I and II from 14 September because of drought. Check the travel update at the top of this page and the DWC before you book.
- Wilpattu. Within the February to October season that Sri Lanka Tourism gives for Wilpattu National Park, and late in the dry season, when animals gather around the remaining water.
- Migrant birds. They start to arrive in and around Yala in September and stay until March.
Holidays
Binara Poya falls on Wednesday 15 September 2027. Like every Poya it is a public holiday and a dry day: liquor shops and bars close and meat isn’t sold. Our festival and Poya calendar has the rest. The Kandy Esala Perahera is usually in July or August; in 2026 it ran from 18 to 28 August.
Crowds and prices
The second visitor peak of the year is in July and August, when Sri Lanka Tourism’s 2025 figures show about 200,000 arrivals each. Our best-time guide suggests September for fewer people while the season changes, as long as you go to a dry coast. You’ll have more choice of rooms than in high season, but check cancellation terms in case rain changes your plans.
Rain plan
September rain usually comes in heavy bursts rather than all day. Keep a spare day on hill-country routes in case of landslides, and keep outdoor plans for the morning. Our guide to travelling in the monsoon seasons covers the warnings to watch.
