Unawatuna is a coastal suburb of Galle, about 5 km south-east of the city centre on Sri Lanka’s south coast. Its curved bay sits beside the wooded Rumassala headland, and it makes a convenient beach base for exploring Galle and its fort.

Is it right for you?
Go if you want a beach stay within easy reach of Galle Fort, with coral reefs and shipwrecks offshore. For surf and a protected reef further up the coast, see Hikkaduwa.
Think twice if you are looking for a quiet, undeveloped beach. A Daily Mirror writer visiting in early 2025 described busier roads, more bars and hotels, and new buildings going up.
The beach
Offshore there are coral reefs, shipwrecks, many kinds of fish and sea turtles, and turtles still come ashore to nest on the beach. The beach itself has been reshaped over the years: the 2004 tsunami swept away many beachfront restaurants, and after years of erosion the Coast Conservation Department began pumping sand back onto the beach in March 2015.

Rumassala and the Peace Pagoda
Rumassala is the hill that forms the eastern side of Galle Harbour. In the Ramayana legend it is said to be a piece of the Himalaya dropped by Hanuman. On the headland between Unawatuna and Galle stands the white Peace Pagoda, built by monks of the Japanese Buddhist order Nipponzan Myohoji.
Swimming safety
The sea here is not always calm. In June 2024 a visitor died after swimming off Unawatuna beach; police said rip currents had probably dragged him out. Ask lifeguards or local people about conditions before you swim, heed local warnings, and take extra care during the south-west monsoon (May to September), when this coast gets its main rains.
Getting there
- By train: Unawatuna has its own station on the coastal line from Colombo; reserved seats can be booked on the official Sri Lanka Railways booking site.
- By road: it is on the A2 coast road, about 5 km from Galle.
