Check before you travel Hill-country railway: repairs after Cyclone Ditwah Checked 19 October 2026
Cyclone Ditwah damaged the hill-country railway in November 2025, and it is reopening in stages. Since 2 October 2026, trains run again from Colombo Fort to Peradeniya and Gampola, but Kandy station itself is not served yet. Earth slips near Kadigamuwa have blocked the line more than once since then, most recently early on 17 October 2026, when trains towards Gampola and Colombo Fort were delayed; expect delays or short suspensions after heavy rain. Trains between Nanu Oya and Badulla, which stop at Haputale, Ella and Demodara, restarted on 20 June 2026. The section between Gampola and Nanu Oya is still under repair, so you cannot yet go by train from Colombo or Kandy all the way to Ella. Check the latest services before you plan a rail journey, and book reserved seats on the Sri Lanka Railways seat reservation site.
January is high season on Sri Lanka’s south and west coasts. The north-east monsoon is still watering the other side of the island, but from Colombo down to Tangalle the days are usually dry and the sea calm, the whales are off Mirissa and the pilgrims are climbing Sri Pada through the night. It is also one of the two busiest months of the year.
Go to the south, the west and the western hills, and you’ll find January hard to fault. Save the east coast and the north for another trip.
Where the weather is good
- South and west coasts. In season from December to March. Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa and Tangalle are at their best, and Sri Lanka Tourism describes Mirissa’s beaches as calm from November to April.
- The western hill country. Kandy, Hatton and Nuwara Eliya are drying out. Nights are cold at altitude: the Department of Census and Statistics records ground frost on a few days in January and February at Nuwara Eliya, so pack a warm layer.
- The ancient cities. The wet season around Anuradhapura, Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa runs from October to December, so January is drying out. Expect the odd shower, and climb early before the heat.
Where it’s still wet
The north-east monsoon runs from December to February. The east coast, from Trincomalee to Arugam Bay, and the north around Jaffna are in their wet season, and seas there can be rough. The eastern hills catch the same monsoon: at Badulla, near Ella, October to January are the wettest months. Ella is still very doable in January, but walk early and expect cloud by late morning.

What’s on in January 2027
- Thai Pongal, Friday 15 January. The Tamil harvest festival is a public holiday.
- Duruthu Poya, Friday 22 January. Every Poya is a public holiday and a dry day: liquor shops and bars close and meat isn’t sold.
- The Duruthu Perahera at Kelaniya. Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, just outside Colombo, holds a procession with elephants and dancers around Duruthu Poya. In 2026 it ran on three nights, 8 to 10 January; check the 2027 dates nearer the time.
- Sri Pada. The pilgrimage season, which opens on Unduvap Poya in December, is in full swing. Sri Lanka Tourism says January to March is particularly busy. Our guide to climbing Sri Pada at night explains how to avoid the worst queues.
Our festival and Poya calendar lists every holiday through to September 2027.
What to do
Whale watching. January is right in the middle of the season off Mirissa, which Sri Lanka Tourism gives as November to April. Choose a boat that keeps its distance; our Mirissa whale-watching guide explains how.
Surfing. Surf schools on the south coast report January and February as the peak of their season, which also means busy line-ups. Beginners do well at Weligama.
The hill-country train. Trains between Nanu Oya, Haputale and Ella have run again since 20 June 2026 after Cyclone Ditwah, and the season’s dry, clear mornings suit the views. Book reserved seats as soon as they go on sale, 30 days ahead. The travel update at the top of this page shows the rest of the line.
Safaris. Yala and Udawalawe are open, and the migrant birds that winter in and around Yala are there from September to March.
Crowds and booking
Sri Lanka Tourism’s figures for 2025 show January as one of the two busiest months, with more than 250,000 visitor arrivals, alongside December. Book rooms on the south coast and in the hill country early, and book trains the day reserved seats go on sale. If you want space, go inland mid-week, and do the big sights at opening time.
For a route that fits January’s weather, our 10 days of beaches and mountains and 14 days in Sri Lanka itineraries both follow the dry south and west.
