If you have two or three days at the start or end of a trip and want to spend them in one place on the west coast, the choice is usually Colombo or Galle. One is a big, hot, busy capital with temples, museums and markets; the other is a small walled town by the sea, with beaches a short ride away. They suit very different moods.
Pick Colombo if you want city life, shopping and the easiest transport. Pick Galle if you want somewhere slower and prettier, and don’t mind a longer journey from the airport.
Colombo: the capital
Colombo is Sri Lanka’s largest city and its commercial capital, and the hub of the rail and bus networks. There’s plenty to fill two days: Gangaramaya Temple and its Seema Malaka on Beira Lake, the Colombo National Museum, the crowded lanes of Pettah Market, the observation deck of the Lotus Tower and the sunset at Galle Face Green. Our free things to do in Colombo and 1 day in Colombo plan it.
The downsides: Colombo is hot all year, the traffic is heavy, and it isn’t a beach holiday. Mount Lavinia, the seaside suburb to the south, is the closest thing to one.
Galle: the old town by the sea
Galle is a port city whose walled old town, Galle Fort, is listed by UNESCO. It’s a lived-in town of streets, churches, a mosque, museums and cafés, enclosed by ramparts above the sea, with no entrance ticket. Walk the walls at sunset, look into the bastion galleries and the two national museums, and spend the hot middle of the day in the shaded streets.
Galle isn’t a beach town either, but the beaches are close. Unawatuna is about 5 km away, and Jungle Beach looks back across the bay at the fort. Recent visitors note that the fort quietens down once the day-trip coaches leave in the afternoon, which is the best argument for staying inside the walls.

Side by side
- Atmosphere: Colombo is a busy capital; Galle Fort is a compact old town that’s quiet in the evenings.
- Sights: Colombo has more museums, temples and markets. Galle has the fort itself, and the ramparts are the main event.
- Beach: Galle, with Unawatuna nearby. Colombo has Mount Lavinia.
- Shopping and eating out: Colombo, by range. Galle Fort has cafés and shops in a small area.
- From the airport: Colombo is closer. The airport’s bus 187 runs 24 hours a day to Colombo Fort in about 50 minutes. For Galle, airport buses connect at Makumbura with buses on the Southern Expressway; see Colombo airport to the south coast.
- Onward travel: Colombo Fort station is the hub for trains to everywhere. Galle is on the coastal line, handy for the south coast but further from the hills and the north.
Getting between them
Galle is on the coastal railway from Colombo, and the station is next to the fort. Travel guides put the train at roughly two to three and a half hours from Colombo Fort, depending on the service, and the drive on the Southern Expressway at about one and a half to two hours, traffic allowing. Our train travel guide explains booking reserved seats.
When to go
Both are on the south-west coast, so they share a season. The south-west monsoon, from May to September, brings most of the rain to this side of the island, and October and November are wet across the island as a whole. Sri Lanka Tourism says the sea on the south-west coast is calm and the weather sunny from November to March.

Which should you choose?
- First night after a long flight: Colombo, or Negombo if you land late; see Colombo or Negombo.
- Two relaxed days to start or finish: Galle, with a night inside the fort and a beach day at Unawatuna.
- Catching a train to the hills or the north next: Colombo, near Colombo Fort station.
- Heading along the south coast next: Galle.
- Want both: easy. Spend a day in Colombo, then take the train down the coast. Our 3 days in Colombo and Galle itinerary does exactly that.
If you’d rather see Galle without moving base, Galle: day trip or overnight weighs it up, and day trips from Colombo lists other outings from the capital.
