The best beaches in Sri Lanka depend on the month you travel. The island has good sand all the way round, but not all at the same time, because two monsoons soak opposite coasts in opposite seasons. This guide sorts the main beaches by coast and season, with a line on what each one is like and a link to its full guide.
The short answer
- November or December to March: the south and west coasts. Sri Lanka Tourism says the sea on the south-west coast is calm and the weather sunny from November to March.
- April: a changeover month. It is warm everywhere, and afternoon thunderstorms are possible on any coast.
- May to September: the east coast and the north. The south-west monsoon brings rain and rougher sea to the other side of the island.
- October and November: the awkward months. Wikipedia describes squalls and, sometimes, tropical cyclones bringing cloud and rain to the south-west, north-east and east. The east coast’s wet season then runs on to about January.
Our guide to the best time to visit Sri Lanka explains the monsoons month by month for the whole island. This page picks the beaches.
South and west coast: November to March
- Mount Lavinia is the closest real beach to Colombo and good for a sunset. Tests have repeatedly found sewage bacteria in the water, so paddle rather than swim.
- Negombo is the airport beach. The sea can be rough, especially in the south-west monsoon, and visitors mention litter on parts of the sand.
- Bentota Beach is a wide beach beside a river mouth, with water sports and boat trips. Currents and waves can be strong.
- Hikkaduwa Beach has a reef lagoon, sea turtles and winter surf, with a nightlife scene in the evenings.
- Unawatuna Beach is the sheltered bay beside Galle. For a quieter cove nearby, see Jungle Beach.
- Dalawella Beach is known for its palm swing and a reef-sheltered lagoon, a short way from Unawatuna.
- Kabalana Beach and the bay at Weligama are surf beaches, not swimming beaches. Weligama is the usual place to learn (see learning to surf in Weligama).
- Mirissa Beach is next to the harbour where most whale-watching trips off the south coast start, from November to April (whale watching from Mirissa).
- Hiriketiya Beach is a small horseshoe bay for surfers, with a crowded line-up in the main season.
- Tangalle is quieter, but much of this coast has strong waves and currents, and visitors have drowned there.

East coast and north: May to September
- Nilaveli Beach is a long white-sand beach north of Trincomalee, with boat trips to Pigeon Island National Park when the sea allows. Rough seas closed the island in December 2023 and again in December 2025.
- Marble Beach is a small ticketed bay run by the Air Force, with calm, clear water in the dry months.
- Pasikuda Beach is the shallow bay that suits children and wading. Along the coast, Kalkudah Beach is the quieter stretch.
- Arugam Bay Main Point is the surf break for April to October.
- Casuarina Beach, near Jaffna, is shallow a long way out. Mullaitivu Beach is long and undeveloped, and the surf there ranges from mild to treacherous, so ask locally.

Choosing by what you want
- Shallow water for children: Pasikuda and Casuarina. Watch children closely at both: lifeguards rescued a seven-year-old at Pasikuda in September 2025.
- Snorkelling: Pigeon Island and the reef lagoon at Hikkaduwa, plus the east end of Unawatuna’s bay. See our guide to snorkelling in Sri Lanka.
- Surf: the south coast from about November to March (Kabalana, Weligama, Hiriketiya, Hikkaduwa) and Arugam Bay from April to October.
- A beach with a town behind it: Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna or Mirissa on the south coast, Negombo near the airport, and Mount Lavinia for an evening out of Colombo.
- Quiet sand: Kalkudah and Mullaitivu, with the trade-off that there are few facilities.
Before you get in the sea
The UK government’s travel advice says many beaches in Sri Lanka have dangerous surf or rip tides at certain times of the year. A calm-looking bay is not proof of a safe one: several of the beaches above have a record of drownings. Read our guide to swimming safety and rip currents before you go in, and check the forecasts and warnings on the Department of Meteorology site.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Which coast has the best beaches in December?
The south and west coasts. Sri Lanka Tourism says the sea there is calm and the weather sunny from November to March. The east coast is still in its wet season then.
Which beaches are best in July and August?
The east coast and the north, such as Nilaveli, Marble Beach and Pasikuda. The south-west coast has rougher sea during the south-west monsoon.
Which is the best beach for children?
Pasikuda’s bay is shallow a long way out and the current is weaker than on much of the coast. Casuarina Beach near Jaffna is also shallow, with a lifeguard reported. Supervise children closely at both.
Which is the nearest beach to Colombo airport?
Negombo. It is also the roughest of the easy options in the monsoon, so ask locally before you swim.
Are Sri Lankan beaches safe for swimming?
Some are, in the right month, but many have dangerous surf or rip currents at certain times of the year. Ask your hotel or the lifeguards before you go in.
