Mirissa Beach is the main swimming beach of the south-coast town of Mirissa. It is a curve of sand backed by coconut palms. A rocky headland closes one end, and a small rock islet, Parrot Rock, sits just off the shore. Come for a swim, a sunset drink and a walk to the nearby viewpoints, but remember that the sea is not equally friendly all year.
Is it worth visiting?
Go if you want a beach with places to eat, drink and sleep within walking distance. Aim for November to April, when Sri Lanka Tourism says the beaches here have fine weather and calm seas.
Think twice if you want a quiet, undisturbed swim. Recent visitors (2026) report vendors who approach you while you sunbathe. Also, the currents off Mirissa have pulled several swimmers into trouble.
Swimming: when the sea is kind
Sri Lanka Tourism puts the best beach weather at November to April. From May to October the south-west monsoon arrives and the sea gets rougher. In the calm months, recent visitors (2026) describe mellow waves off the main beach, good for a dip or a first surf lesson. They say more experienced surfers head for the reef breaks off the headland.
The sea still needs respect, even then. In late 2025 Police lifeguards rescued four foreign visitors caught in a strong current at Kotawila, Mirissa, on 24 October. They rescued a Georgian visitor on 20 December. On 25 December a man drowned while bathing off the beach.
Coast Guard lifesavers have worked from a post at Mirissa. A 2019 Coast Guard report credits lifesavers at Mirissa, Unawatuna and Bentota with rescuing ten foreign visitors in a single week. So look for lifeguards before you go in. Ask where it is safe that day, and stay out when the red flags are up.

Parrot Rock
Parrot Rock is the little islet that most people climb for the view back over the bay. Recent visitors (2026) give the same advice about it:
- Check the tide. At low tide you can walk across. At high tide you wade through waist-high water, and in the monsoon the waves make the crossing dangerous.
- Wear shoes. The way over is sharp rock and mud, and the steps at the top are described as rickety.
- Go early. Sunset is the busiest time on the rock, and sunrise is much quieter.
Coconut Tree Hill and Secret Beach
Coconut Tree Hill is the headland of tall palms that fills Mirissa’s postcards. Recent visitors say it is about a 15-minute walk from the beach. It is on private land (see our Mirissa guide for the history), and a small bar has opened there. Visitors say it is best at sunrise and packed from about 9 am. They also warn about falling coconuts, so don’t stand directly under the trees.
Secret Beach, around the corner, is no longer much of a secret, but it is quieter than the main beach. It is really three small beaches with rockpools. You reach it by a steep walk of 10 to 20 minutes up the harbour road, or by tuk-tuk to the track. Recent visitors report sunbeds and snorkel rental there, and an almost empty beach early in the morning.
Eating, drinking and the evening
As the light goes, the beach bars along the strip fill up and light the shore. Fresh coconuts are sold on the sand, and recent visitors describe a vendor climbing the tree, cutting one down and opening it for you. The same vendors can get persistent, so decide in advance if you want anything.
For sunset, the beach itself is easier than Parrot Rock. You get the same view with a drink in your hand and no crowd on a rock.
Getting there
Mirissa has a station on the coastal railway. Recent visitors describe about three hours from Colombo. By road there is only one coast road, so take any bus heading for Tangalle from Galle or Unawatuna and get off at Mirissa.
The beach is the reason most people come. The town’s fishing harbour is also where the whale-watching boats leave from, so read our guide to whale watching from Mirissa before you book.
