Haputale and Nuwara Eliya are both tea-country towns on the same hill-country railway. Both make a good base for Horton Plains. But they’re very different places to wake up in. Nuwara Eliya is the bigger, busier hill station, with a lake, a park, colonial hotels and horse races in April. Haputale is a small working town strung along a ridge, with tea falling away on both sides.
Choose Nuwara Eliya for things to do in town, a choice of places to stay and an easy start for Horton Plains. Choose Haputale if you want quiet, views and tea walks, and you’re carrying on to Ella.
Nuwara Eliya: the hill station
Nuwara Eliya stands 1,868 m above sea level. The British developed it as a cool-climate retreat, which earned it the nickname “Little England”. The town still has Gregory Lake, Victoria Park, the red-brick post office and colonial hotels such as the Grand and the Hill Club. Around it are Pedro Tea Estate, Hakgala Botanic Gardens and Moon Plains. The Sri Lanka Tea Board says the surrounding tea district has the highest average elevation of Sri Lanka’s tea regions.
It’s cool all year, so pack a warm layer. It’s busiest in April, when the town holds races, golf tournaments and a flower show around the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. The nearest station is Nanu Oya, a short drive away.

Haputale: the ridge town
Haputale is a small town in Badulla District, further east along the railway towards Ella. Sri Lanka Tourism describes this corner of the hills as a place of tea plantations, peaks and waterfalls. It was a favourite haunt of Sir Thomas Lipton. The sights are tea-country ones. Lipton’s Seat above the Dambatenne estate is the sunrise spot. Adisham Bungalow is a 1931 stone country house that’s now a Benedictine monastery. And Sri Lanka Tourism picks out the train ride west to Idalgashinna as a highlight of the line.
Recent visitors describe Haputale as less polished than its neighbours, with cheaper rooms and a more everyday feel. It has fewer cafés and services. Our guide to tea-country visits around Haputale plans a morning there.
