Victoria Park is a 27-acre public garden in the middle of Nuwara Eliya, next to the post office. The Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council runs it. It is a place for lawns, flower beds and a stroll rather than a big sight. It is also one of the better places in the hill country to look for winter migrant birds.

Is it worth visiting?

Go if you like gardens, you are travelling with children, or you want an easy hour in town between meals. Birdwatchers have a better reason to come than anyone. This is because a few uncommon winter visitors give the park its reputation.

Think twice if you are short on time and have already seen a botanic garden. Our Hakgala Botanic Gardens guide covers a larger garden on the edge of the hill country. The flowers are the main draw here, so the park looks plainer outside the spring season.

A short history

The ground began as a research field for the Hakgala Botanical Garden. It took its formal name in 1897 from Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, which marked 60 years of her reign. Sri Lanka’s provincial tourism site says a German princess visiting Nuwara Eliya planted an oak that started the park. It adds that an oak from 1898 still stands. It also lists a “Tree of Peace” planted after the First World War.

Today the park covers about 27 acres. A stream, the Nanu Oya, runs through it and forms small ponds. A children’s playground also sits at the far end.

What to see in Victoria Park

  • The flower beds: the provincial tourism page names March and April as the best months. The park then fills with colour. According to the Sri Lanka Army, a spring flower show with garden competitions took place here on 17 and 18 April 2026.
  • Lawns and shade trees: good for a picnic, and for letting children run about after a long drive.
  • The playground: at the far end of the park, away from the entrance.
  • Birds: the park is best known for the Pied Thrush and the Kashmir Flycatcher, both winter visitors to the highlands. A birding writer who visited in March 2025 found the thrushes beside the small stream, hidden in the undergrowth. The flycatcher, however, was easier to see at a rubbish-dump site outside the park.

Practical tips

  • Hours: the park does not publish hours that we could check. Recent visitors (2025–26) and travel listings report that it opens daily from about 7 am to 6 pm.
  • Entry fee: there is a charge at the gate. Visitor sources quote different amounts for foreign and local visitors. We found no official figure, so carry some small notes and check the price at the ticket window.
  • For birds: go early. A bird photographer wrote that the thrushes show up by the stream in the morning, although afternoons can work too. Bring binoculars, but keep to the paths and talk quietly.
  • April season: travel guides describe April as the town’s peak season, with flower shows, horse racing and parades. So book a room well ahead and expect crowds in the park. See also our Nuwara Eliya guide for the town as a whole.
  • How long: an hour is enough for the garden. Then give birdwatching another hour or more.
  • Weather: Nuwara Eliya is a hill town. So bring a warm layer and a light rain jacket, especially for early mornings.

Around Victoria Park

For tea, visit the Pedro Tea Estate. For views and cool air, go up to Horton Plains National Park on an early start.

Gregory Lake is the other pleasant open space in town.
