Pasikuda Beach (also spelt Pasikudah or Passikudah) is a bay on Sri Lanka’s east coast, about 35 km north-west of Batticaloa. Its claim to fame is the water. According to Wikipedia, the bay has one of the longest stretches of shallow reef coastline in the world, so you can wade a long way out. The currents are weaker than on most of Sri Lanka’s coast. It is a bay for paddling, not for waves.

Is it worth visiting?

Go if you want a calm, shallow beach for a family holiday or a lazy swim. Aim for about May to September, the dry season on the east coast.

Think twice if you want surf, snorkelling over a lively reef, or a beach with no resorts behind it. Between about October and January most of this coast’s rain falls and the sea turns rough.

Shallow water, but still watch the children

The bay’s shallow, calm water is what draws families. Even so, shallow water is no babysitter. In September 2025 Sri Lanka Coast Guard lifeguards rescued a seven-year-old from drowning off the beach. So keep children within arm’s reach, and ask your hotel where the lifeguards are.

The reef here is protected. Corals fall under Sri Lanka’s Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance, so don’t stand on, touch or take them. In August 2026 the Department of Wildlife Conservation began surveying the reefs of the Kayankerni Marine Sanctuary and the neighbouring Pasikuda coast. The survey is meant to guide conservation and sustainable tourism.

When to go

The east coast is in Sri Lanka’s dry zone. Most of its rain falls from about October to January. The middle of the year is the dry season here. The south-west monsoon brings rain to the other side of the island, around Galle and Bentota, and leaves this coast sunnier and calmer. Several travel guides give May to September as the best window.

After Cyclone Ditwah in late November 2025, Sri Lanka Tourism said on 4 December that Passikudah was among the tourism areas with favourable weather.

Resorts and the neighbouring beach

The bay was a popular spot before the 2004 tsunami and the civil war devastated the area. Hotels have been built along the bay since the war ended in 2009. Pasikuda is now one of the main tourism zones on the east coast, alongside Arugam Bay, Trincomalee and Nilaveli. Kalkudah, along the coast, has its own long beach. See our guide to Kalkudah Beach if you want a quieter stretch.

Getting there

Valaichchenai, a few kilometres from the beach, has a station on the Batticaloa line. The official Sri Lanka Railways booking site lists it as “Valachchena”. Services from Colombo Fort resumed in January and February 2026 after Cyclone Ditwah. Check which trains stop there when you book, then take a tuk-tuk to the beach.

By road, Pasikuda is reached from Batticaloa to the south or Trincomalee to the north. Our Pasikuda and Kalkudah guide and the Batticaloa guide cover the area.
