Arugam Bay is a surf town and bay on Sri Lanka’s south-east coast, in Ampara District of the Eastern Province. It lies about 4 km south of the market town of Pottuvil. Surfing drives most of its tourism, and Pottuvil, with its shops, bus stand and the Muhudu Maha Vihara ruins by the sea, is where most visitors arrive.

Is Arugam Bay for you?

Go if you surf or want to learn, and can travel between April and October, the surf season given by Sri Lanka Tourism.

Think twice if you travel from November to March, when recent visitors (2025) report that most hotels and restaurants close. Also think twice if you want gentle sea swimming, because Sri Lanka Tourism warns the waves can be too strong for beginners.

Surfing

Sri Lanka Tourism names three point breaks: the point at Arugam Bay itself, known to surfers as Main Point, Pottuvil Point and Crocodile Rock. The season runs from April to October. Arugam Bay hosted the World Surf League’s So Sri Lanka Pro in September 2019. A year earlier, in 2018, the Arugam Bay Girls Surf Club became the country’s first women’s surf club.

Recent visitors (2024) report that you can hire boards almost everywhere, and that mainly beginners use Crocodile Rock, also called Elephant Rock.

Pottuvil and Muhudu Maha Vihara

Muhudu Maha Vihara, the “temple by the sea”, stands near the beach at Pottuvil. The law protects it as an archaeological monument. The Rajavaliya chronicle tells how Princess Viharamahadevi was set adrift at sea and later married King Kavantissa of Ruhuna. Local tradition holds that she came ashore here, but people also link Kirinda, on the south coast, with her landing. Among the ruins are a standing Buddha statue and two figures thought to be royalty. How old the ruins are is uncertain. Inland, Gal Oya National Park runs boat safaris on the Senanayake Samudraya reservoir.

Recent visitors (2025) report two-hour boat trips on Pottuvil Lagoon, run by local fishermen from the southern end of the lagoon. They mention sightings of birds, crocodiles and sometimes elephants, but the boats have no shade, so late afternoon is cooler. Inland, Lahugala Kitulana National Park is known for elephants, which gather to feed on the grass around its tanks. To the north, around Ampara, are two ancient Buddhist sites: Deegavapi, one of the sixteen most sacred, and the forest monastery of Rajagala, reached by ancient stone stairways through the jungle.

Safety and security

On 23 October 2024 the US Embassy in Colombo told US citizens to avoid the Arugam Bay area. It cited “credible information” of an attack targeting popular tourist spots there. The UK, Australia, Israel and other countries also advised their citizens to avoid the area or take extra care. Sri Lanka Police said it had deployed about 500 police and Special Task Force personnel to the area, with roadblocks and vehicle checks. In early November the public security minister said the investigations had led to six arrests. After that, the US lifted its restriction on 13 November 2024. Then, in November 2025, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake told Parliament the plan had been dismantled.

The UK’s travel advice (updated September 2026) does not single out Arugam Bay. However, it warns that attacks in Sri Lanka remain possible, including at beaches and tourist sites. It adds that many beaches have dangerous surf or rip currents at certain times of year. Check your own government’s advice, such as the UK Foreign Office’s Sri Lanka page, before you go, and ask locally about sea conditions.

Getting there

  • By road: Pottuvil is on the A4 highway, which runs from Colombo through Ratnapura, Wellawaya and Monaragala to Batticaloa. Arugam Bay is about 4 km south of Pottuvil.
  • By bus: recent visitors (2025) report that most long-distance buses stop in Pottuvil rather than Arugam Bay, with tuk-tuks for the last stretch. From Ella, they take a bus to Wellawaya and change there for Pottuvil.
  • By train: there is no railway station in the area. The nearest line ends at Batticaloa, about 117 km to the north.
