Sri Lanka in July and August: Festivals and the Dry East

July and August are Sri Lanka’s festival months, and a very good time to be on the other side of the island. The south-west monsoon is bringing rain and rough seas to the south and west coasts, but the east coast, the north and the ancient cities are at their driest. Kandy’s Esala Perahera, the Nallur festival in Jaffna and the procession season at Kataragama all fall around now, and the elephants of Minneriya gather on the shores of their shrinking tank.

The catch is that you need to choose your coast carefully, and book ahead around the big festivals.

Is July or August a good time to visit?

Go if you want the festivals, the east coast at its best, the elephant Gathering or the surf at Arugam Bay.

Think twice if your idea of Sri Lanka is the south-coast beaches around Mirissa and Galle. They are in their wet season, with rough seas and red flags, and are better from December to March.

The weather, region by region

  • East coast (Trincomalee, Pasikuda, Arugam Bay): in its driest months, which run from about April to August. This is the coast to head for.
  • North (Jaffna): also driest around June and July.
  • Ancient cities (Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa): driest from June to September, and hot.
  • South and west coasts: the south-west monsoon, from May to September, brings rain and rougher seas. Swimming is often unsafe; see our guide to swimming safety and rip currents.
  • Hill country: split down the middle. The western slopes around Hatton and Nuwara Eliya get heavy rain from June to August, while the eastern side, around Ella and Badulla, has its driest months in June and July.

Our guide to the best time to visit Sri Lanka has the year-round picture.

Festivals

  • The Kataragama festival. About two weeks of nightly processions at Kataragama as the moon waxes in the month of Esala, ending with fire-walking and a water-cutting ceremony in the Menik Ganga. The dates move a lot: 26 June to 11 July in 2025, 15 to 30 July in 2026.
  • The Kandy Esala Perahera. About ten nights of processions with dancers, drummers and decorated elephants in Kandy, held in July or August on dates set by the Temple of the Tooth’s astrologers. In 2026 it ran from 18 to 28 August. The temple publishes the schedule on its Esala Perahera page. Our guide to whether the Perahera is worth planning around covers seats, crowds and rooms.
  • The Nallur festival. About 25 days of ceremonies at the Nallur Kandaswamy Temple in Jaffna, usually starting in July or August and sometimes running into September, with the chariot festival on the 24th day. See our Nallur festival guide.
  • Poya days. Esala Poya falls on Sunday 18 July 2027 and Nikini Poya on Monday 16 August 2027. Both are public holidays and dry days, when liquor shops and bars close.

Rooms in Kandy and Jaffna fill up around the big festival days, so book well ahead. Our festival and Poya calendar lists every date.

Wildlife

  • The Gathering at Minneriya. As the water in Minneriya’s tank recedes in the dry season, elephants come from the surrounding forests to graze on the exposed banks. Sri Lanka Tourism names May to October as the popular time, and recent visitors (2025–26) report that numbers usually peak in August and September. See Minneriya National Park.
  • Whales off Trincomalee. Boats run from the beaches north of Trincomalee in the middle of the year, when the east coast is dry; the best period reported is May to August. See whale watching from Trincomalee.
  • Yala. Open, but in the driest part of the year the Department of Wildlife Conservation has often closed its main blocks for several weeks around September and October, so check before you plan a late-August safari. See Yala National Park.

Surf and beaches

Arugam Bay is in its surf season, which Sri Lanka Tourism gives as April to October, and the town is at its liveliest. See surfing around Arugam Bay. Further north, the beaches around Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Pasikuda are at their best for swimming.

Crowds and booking

July and August are the year’s second peak for visitors: Sri Lanka Tourism’s figures for 2025 show about 200,000 arrivals in each, fewer than December and January but well above May and June. Book Kandy for the Perahera, Jaffna for the Nallur chariot day, and the popular east-coast hotels early. Reserved train seats go on sale 30 days ahead on the Sri Lanka Railways seat reservation site.

A route for July and August

Start in the Cultural Triangle for Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and the Minneriya Gathering, add Kandy if the Perahera is on, then cross to the east coast for Trincomalee or Arugam Bay. With more time, add Jaffna in the north for the Nallur festival. Our east coast in 9 days and northern Sri Lanka in 7 days itineraries both suit these months.
