Trincomalee or Arugam Bay is the usual question for anyone heading to Sri Lanka’s east coast in the middle of the year, when the south-west is wet and the east is in season. They share a coast and a season, but not much else. Trincomalee is a port city with a temple on a cliff, a fort and calm beaches to the north, with snorkelling and whale-watching boats offshore. Arugam Bay is a surf town, built around its waves.
Choose Arugam Bay if you surf or want to learn. For almost anything else, Trincomalee is the better base.
Arugam Bay: for the waves
Arugam Bay lies about 4 km south of Pottuvil on the south-east coast. Surfing drives most of its tourism. Sri Lanka Tourism names three point breaks: the point at Arugam Bay itself, known to surfers as Main Point, Pottuvil Point and Crocodile Rock, which recent visitors (2024) say is mainly used by beginners. The World Surf League held a contest here in 2019. Boards are for hire almost everywhere, and our Arugam Bay surfing guide covers lessons and line-up manners.
Away from the water, recent visitors (2025) describe two-hour boat trips on Pottuvil Lagoon with birds and crocodiles, and inland, Kumana National Park and Lahugala Kitulana are known for waterbirds and elephants.
The catch for non-surfers: Sri Lanka Tourism warns that the waves can be too strong for beginners to swim in. If you want gentle sea swimming, this isn’t the place.
Trincomalee: for everything else
Trincomalee is built around a deep natural harbour on the north-east coast. On its headland, Koneswaram Temple stands on Swami Rock above the sea, reached through the gate of Fort Frederick. North of town, the beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli run along the coast.
From Nilaveli, boats cross to Pigeon Island National Park, about 1 km offshore, where snorkellers often see blacktip reef sharks and turtles. Whale-watching trips run from Trincomalee too, and Marble Beach, south of town, has calm, clear water for a swim in the dry months.

Side by side
- Surf: Arugam Bay, with three named point breaks and boards for hire almost everywhere.
- Swimming: Trincomalee’s beaches, Nilaveli and Marble Beach in the dry months. At Arugam Bay the waves can be too strong for beginners.
- Snorkelling: Pigeon Island, off Nilaveli.
- Culture and history: Trincomalee, with Koneswaram and Fort Frederick.
- Wildlife: Arugam Bay, for Kumana and the elephants around Lahugala and Gal Oya. Trincomalee has the boats out to sea.
- Getting there: Trincomalee has a railway station, with trains from Colombo Fort. Arugam Bay has none; the nearest line ends at Batticaloa, about 117 km north, so you come by road on the A4.
When to go
Both are in season in the middle of the year, while the south-west monsoon brings rain to the other side of the island.
- Arugam Bay: Sri Lanka Tourism gives the surf season as April to October. From November to March, recent visitors (2025) report that most hotels and restaurants close.
- Trincomalee: most rain falls from about October to January, and rough seas then often close Pigeon Island. The middle of the year is the dry season.
So from about May to September, both work. In April, Arugam Bay’s season is starting. Our guides to Sri Lanka in July and August and the best time to visit explain the pattern.

Safety
Check your own government’s travel advice before you go. In October 2024 the US Embassy told its citizens to avoid the Arugam Bay area after credible information about a planned attack; the restriction was lifted on 13 November 2024, and the UK’s advice, updated in September 2026, doesn’t single out Arugam Bay.
On either coast, rip currents are a risk at certain times of year, so ask locally about the sea and read our guide to swimming safety.
Doing both
With a week or more on the east coast you can link them by road. Our nine days on the east coast itinerary sets out a route, with Batticaloa and Pasikuda in between. If you’re deciding where to stay around Trincomalee, see Trincomalee, Nilaveli or Pasikuda, and for surf, the south coast or Arugam Bay.
