April is Sri Lanka’s changeover month. The north-east monsoon has finished, the south-west monsoon hasn’t quite arrived, and the island sits in the first inter-monsoon: hot, mostly dry, with afternoon thunderstorms that can break out anywhere. It is also New Year month, when much of the country goes home for the holidays and the hill country fills up.
For a traveller it is a month of choices: the end of the season in the south, the start of it in the east, and the busiest week of the year in Nuwara Eliya.
Is April a good time to visit?
Go if you want to see the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, catch the very end of the south-coast season and the start of the east-coast one, or climb Sri Pada at the peak of its pilgrim season.
Think twice if you can’t cope with heat, or your dates fall around the New Year holiday itself, when trains, buses and hill-country rooms are busy and some businesses close for a few days.
The weather
April falls in the first inter-monsoon, from March to April, when afternoon thunderstorms can break out anywhere but less rain falls overall than in October and November. It is hot everywhere in the lowlands.
- South and west coasts: the end of the main season. More rain falls on the west coast in April than earlier in the year, and the south-west monsoon arrives in May, so April is the last month of calm-sea plans in the south.
- East coast: drying out. The driest months in the east run from about April to August, so April is the start of its season.
- Hill country: cooler than the lowlands. Around Nuwara Eliya, it is the height of the local season.
- Cultural Triangle: hot, with a wet spell in April around Anuradhapura. Climb and explore early and late in the day.

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year
The biggest family holiday of the year falls in April. In 2027 it is on Wednesday 14 April, and the day before is also a public holiday. Astrologers set the auspicious times for the rituals, such as lighting the hearth and eating the first meal of the year, which in Sinhalese homes means milk rice, kiribath.
What it means for you:
- People go home. Many Sri Lankans travel back to their home towns, and Sri Lanka Tourism describes a general pause in government, business and banking around the New Year. Expect some shops, restaurants and offices to close for a few days.
- Transport is busy. In 2026 the transport board and Sri Lanka Railways added extra buses and trains for the holiday. Book trains as early as you can on the Sri Lanka Railways seat reservation site.
- The day before the New Year is a dry day, when liquor shops and bars close, as is New Year’s Day itself, according to the Excise Department’s 2026 list. Bak Poya, the April full moon, falls on Tuesday 20 April 2027 and is a dry day too.
Our festival and Poya calendar has every date.
Nuwara Eliya’s April season
April is the busiest month in Nuwara Eliya. Around the New Year the town holds motor and horse racing, golf tournaments and a flower show, and the Department of National Botanic Gardens calls mid-March to the end of April the Nuwara Eliya season, when Hakgala Botanic Gardens is at its best. Book well ahead if you want to stay in town, or base yourself somewhere quieter such as Haputale or Ella and visit for the day.
What’s in season
- Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak): the pilgrimage season runs from December to Vesak in May, and Sri Lanka Tourism says April is its peak. Expect big crowds on the path. See our Sri Pada guide.
- Whales off Mirissa: the south-coast season runs from November to April, so April is the last month. See Mirissa whale watching.
- Surf at Arugam Bay: Sri Lanka Tourism gives the season as April to October, so April is the start. See surfing around Arugam Bay.
- The east coast beaches: Trincomalee and Pasikuda head into their dry months.
A route for April
Split the trip by coast. Start in the Cultural Triangle and the hill country, avoiding the New Year days for long journeys, then finish on the east coast around Trincomalee or Pasikuda, or at Arugam Bay for surf. If you’d rather be in the south, go early in the month, before the seas start to build. Our east coast in 9 days itinerary suits the second half of April.
