October is the wettest stretch of the year for Sri Lanka as a whole. It’s the start of the second inter-monsoon, when afternoon and evening thunderstorms and passing depressions can bring heavy rain anywhere, and the season when cyclones sometimes form. It’s also a month of last chances: the end of the surf season at Arugam Bay, the tail of the elephant Gathering, and the final weeks of the dry season in the north-west.
Travel in October if you’re flexible, happy with rain in bursts, and keen on quieter places. Keep a spare day or two in the plan.
What the weather does
The Department of Census and Statistics describes October and November as the second inter-monsoon: light winds, thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, and depressions that bring widespread heavy rain. For the island as a whole, it’s the rainiest time of year. Recent visitors (2025–26) report that monsoon rain usually comes in heavy bursts with dry spells between, rather than all day, and mornings are often clearer.
It also turns both coasts at once. The south-west monsoon has passed, but the west and south coasts are still wet and only start drying out towards December. The east coast and the north move into their wet season, which runs from about October to January. In the hills, October to January are the wettest months at Badulla, near Ella, and Sri Lanka Tourism says rainfall at Nuwara Eliya is usually highest in October.
Landslides and floods are the real risk. Heavy rain closes hill roads and the railway, so check the Department of Meteorology’s forecasts and the National Building Research Organisation’s landslide warnings, and don’t plan a hill-country leg the day before an international flight. Our guide to travelling in the monsoon seasons explains what to watch.

What’s still good in October
- Elephants at Kaudulla. Around September many elephants move on from Minneriya to the neighbouring Kaudulla tank, and Sri Lanka Tourism names May to October as the popular time for the Gathering. When the rains set in, the herds disperse. See the elephant Gathering.
- Wilpattu. October is the last month of Sri Lanka Tourism’s February to October season for Wilpattu National Park, though heavy rain can flood the Kala Oya and close the Eluwankulama entrance.
- Arugam Bay. The surf season there runs from April to October according to Sri Lanka Tourism, so October is the end of it.
- Yala. The Department of Wildlife Conservation has traditionally closed parts of Yala in the driest months, around September and October. In 2026 Blocks I and II closed from 14 September and reopened on 16 October.
- Cities and culture. Colombo, Kandy and Galle Fort have plenty to do under cover when it rains: museums, temples, markets and food.
Holidays in October
Vap Poya fell on Sunday 25 October in 2026; like every Poya it’s a public holiday and a dry day, when liquor shops and bars close and meat isn’t sold. In 2026 the Excise Department also listed World Temperance Day, 3 October, as a dry day. Deepavali, the Hindu festival of lights, was a public holiday on 8 November in 2026. Our festival and Poya calendar has the dates.
Crowds
October comes before the December to January peak, when Sri Lanka Tourism’s figures show the most visitor arrivals of the year, so there’s less competition for rooms. Book places with fair cancellation terms, so you can move if the forecast turns.
An October plan
Keep the plan loose. Spend the early part of the trip in the Cultural Triangle and the north-west for Kaudulla and Wilpattu, keep the hills for a few days with a spare day built in, and finish in Colombo or Galle, where a wet afternoon is easy to fill. If you can push your trip back a few weeks, Sri Lanka in November sees the south coast coming into season, and our guide to the best time to visit Sri Lanka compares every month.
