June is one of the quietest months to visit Sri Lanka, and one of the most underrated. The south-west monsoon is in full swing on the west and south coasts, but the other side of the island is in its dry season: the east coast beaches, the north around Jaffna and the ancient cities are at their best. Add Poson, the festival that marks the arrival of Buddhism, and the first build-up of elephants at Minneriya, and June has plenty going for it.
Plan around the east and the north, and you’ll have far more space than in the winter peak.
Where the weather is good in June
- The east coast. From Trincomalee and Nilaveli down to Pasikuda and Arugam Bay, the middle of the year is the dry season. Arugam Bay’s surf season, from April to October according to Sri Lanka Tourism, is well under way. Our guide to Trincomalee, Nilaveli or Pasikuda helps you choose a base.
- The north. Jaffna is driest in June and July.
- The ancient cities. Anuradhapura, Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa are driest from June to September. It’s hot, so climb early.
Where it’s wet
The south-west monsoon, from May to September, brings rain to the west and south coasts and the western hill country, with the heaviest rain in the hills from June to August. Seas off Galle, Mirissa and Bentota are rough, and visitors and tour operators report red flags against swimming on south- and west-coast beaches in May and June. Whale watching off Mirissa has finished for the year; its season runs from November to April.
The eastern hills are different: at Badulla, near Ella, June and July are the driest months. So Ella and the walks around it are a good bet, while Hatton and Nuwara Eliya are wetter.

Poson in June 2027
Poson Poya falls on Friday 18 June 2027. It marks the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, and the national festival centres on Mihintale, near Anuradhapura, where Buddhist tradition says the monk Mahinda met King Devanampiya Tissa. Very large numbers of pilgrims dressed in white come to Anuradhapura and Mihintale, and Sri Lanka Railways runs extra trains.
Like every Poya, it’s a public holiday and a dry day, when liquor shops and bars close and meat isn’t sold. In recent years the Excise Department has kept liquor outlets in and around Anuradhapura’s sacred city shut for the whole of Poson week. If you want quiet monuments, avoid that week; if you want the festival, book a room early.
The Kataragama festival, with nightly processions and fire-walking, moves a lot from year to year: it ran from 26 June to 11 July in 2025 and from 15 to 30 July in 2026. Our festival and Poya calendar lists the dates as they’re announced.
Wildlife in June
- The elephant Gathering. Sri Lanka Tourism names May to October as the popular time at Minneriya, and numbers build through the dry season, peaking in August and September. June is early, but there are elephants. See the elephant Gathering.
- Wilpattu. Inside Sri Lanka Tourism’s February to October season for Wilpattu National Park.
- Whale watching off Trincomalee. Trips run from Trincomalee in the middle of the year, though sources disagree on the exact months; see our Trincomalee whale-watching guide.
Crowds and prices
Sri Lanka Tourism’s figures for 2025 show May and June as the quietest months of the year, with fewer than 140,000 visitor arrivals each, against more than 250,000 in December and January. That means more choice of rooms, except around Poson in Anuradhapura.
A June route
Fly into Colombo, head north to Anuradhapura and the Cultural Triangle, cross to the east coast at Trincomalee or Pasikuda, and add Jaffna if you have time. Our east coast itinerary and northern Sri Lanka in 7 days are built for these months. If you also want the hills, Ella is drier than Nuwara Eliya in June.
