Handunugoda Tea Estate

AttractionGalle District, Southern Province
#12 of 17 things to do in Galle District

Handunugoda Tea Estate is a working lowland tea estate and factory at Tittagalla, inland from the south coast near Ahangama in Galle District. It is best known for Virgin White Tea, a rare white tea the family sells under the Herman Teas name. Visitors can walk through the plantation, see the factory and finish with a tasting and a slice of cake at the planter’s bungalow.

It’s a good half-day if you’re staying on the Galle–Ahangama–Mirissa stretch of coast and want to see how tea is made without going up to the hills. Just don’t expect misty slopes and sweeping views: this is low-lying, warm tea country. If you’ll be in Nuwara Eliya or Haputale anyway, the hill-country factories there, such as Dambatenne Tea Factory and Pedro Tea Estate, are a better use of your time.

The estate and its tea

The estate belongs to the family of Malinga Herman Gunaratne, who runs it and whose family has held it through three generations, according to the estate itself. It covers about 200 acres and was once part of a much larger holding. Other crops grow here too: visitor accounts and the trade press mention cinnamon, and the estate smokes one of its teas, Ceylon Souchong, over cinnamon wood.

The famous product is Virgin White Tea. The estate tells it through an old Chinese legend in which young women in silk gloves cut the buds with golden scissors for an emperor. Treat that as a story, not documented history. What the estate says it does today is simpler: pluckers pick unopened buds at dawn wearing gloves, the buds are dried on trays in filtered sunlight rather than rolled or fermented.

It is expensive. The estate’s own online shop lists it from US$26, and you will find it for sale in the estate shop. Most visitors taste it on the tour and decide there.

Tours and what you pay

These details come from the estate’s own website in October 2026. Prices change, so check the booking page before you go.

  • Opening hours: daily, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
  • Standard tour: LKR 1,000 ($3.01 · convert) per person (about US$3.50), free for children under 14. It includes a guided plantation walk, a tour of the factory and its old machinery, a tea appreciation session, and cake with Oolong tea at the Planter’s Bungalow.
  • Private tour: US$25 per person, with a tea gift pack included.
  • How long: visitors describe tours of about an hour to two hours.

You can book through the estate’s site or by phone and email (contact details are on hermanteas.com). Recent visitors (2025–26) report that reviews are mixed on whether the fee is good value, and that the teas in the shop are pricey. A local guide advises weekday mornings if you want fewer people and a chance to see pluckers at work.

What to expect

You start in the tea fields, where a guide explains plucking, then move to the factory. The machinery is old, well over a century by the estate’s account.

The visit ends at the bungalow, where you drink tea and eat cake. There is a small museum and a shop selling tea and tea gifts.

Bring a hat, sun cream and light clothing, as this is warm lowland country with little shade on the walk.

Getting there

The address is Handunugoda Tea Factory, Tittagalla, Ahangama. It is inland from the coast road, and visitors report roughly 30 minutes by road from Galle Fort and a drive of 15 minutes or so from Koggala. The approach road is narrow and winding, so use a map app. Recent visitors mostly arrive by tuk-tuk or with a driver.

It pairs easily with other stops nearby: Koggala Lake and the mangroves of Madu Ganga are close, and Kabalana Beach makes a good afternoon after a morning tour. Galle is a common starting point, and Mirissa and Weligama lie further east along the coast.
